Ikechukwu is a hardworking Man, he has worked very hard to get where he is in life, irrespective of the fact that he had no one to give him handouts in life, or speak kindly of him in the corridors of power. For he wasn’t born with silver spoon in his mouth, yet he has worked so hard at his career to the point where he now earns enough to take care of his basic needs and foot his bills comfortably.
He is in a relationship with Chioma, Chioma is from a wealthy home, Chioma is educated and has some fancy degree from a Private University, her life is almost like those fantasy stories created by Walt Disney and shot by Steven Spielberg. She can afford to go wherever she wanted, buy whatever she wanted, without apologising to anybody.
Ikechukwu is not used to this kind of elaborate living, he never had anyone take care of him in that manner, or a wealthy family to give him a soft landing. But then, he truly loves Chioma enough to want to marry her, but he is scared.
He knows he can take care of Chioma’s basic needs, but he fears that he might not be able to offer her a flamboyant lifestyle like she has become accustomed to. Based on this, he has doubts if Chioma can bring herself to settle with him and adapt to a comfortable but not so flamboyant way of living, with him as her husband. This has been a very serious contention in his mind.
Chioma on the other hand, is wearly of waiting, as she often asks herself, ‘why can’t Ikechukwu just get himself to propose to me already, is he not man enough?’, she often wonders. ‘Of course I know he loves me and I love him too, and I know he doesn’t have so much yet, but I don’t expect him to, for goodness sake he has done well for himself, he has a comfortable job, a comfortable accommodation, and a car of his own. He is even doing better that most of his mates, I really don’t expect so much from him, I am willing to partner with him, we can grow our finances together, we can build a life of our dreams together’.
But sadly all this are merely in her mind, but who can reconcile these differences which evidently exist only in their minds, who can bridge the gap between what they think, and what they both consciously and unconsciously express?
It is the beginning of another year, and as Chioma is running out of patience, Nancy is gradually encroaching into Ikechukwu’s life…
