The Imo State Government said yesterday that its position that most of the protests in the State were sponsored by the opposition has been vindicated, following the arrest by the Police yesterday of hoodlums armed with guns and machetes, claiming to be staff of the State Oil Commission and claiming to be protesting for non payment of salaries.
The State Police Command yesterday arrested and paraded a band of hoodlums armed with guns, machetes and other dangerous weapons, masquerading as staff of the Imo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (ISOPADEC), claiming to be on a peaceful protest.
A statement yesterday by the State Commissioner of Information and Strategy said the hoodlums ran out of luck when they ran into the Governor’s convoy enroute to the Military Barracks in Obinze, where the Governor was headed to commission an Officers’ Mess Complex built by the State Government.
The statement said the fact that people claiming to be staff of ISOPADEC could arm themselves with guns and machetes says it all, adding they were hired thugs by the opposition, who were rattled by the public ovation that greeted the Governor’s successful commissioning of new roads in Owerri on Friday.
“The opposition is smarting from the irredeemable shame the Government’s successes is rubbing on their face and they quickly thought of another protest to take the shine out of the increasingly unbeatable trajectory of Governor Uzodinma’s success story. But luck ran out of them this time” Emelumba said.
He urged the Police to unravel the real motive behind the action of the hoodlums and their sponsors.
